As we, the class of January '53, leave
Lane, we can point with pride to the athletics of our class which have
helped keep Lane where it is, as one of the top ranking athletic schools
of the city.
As we leave Lane, a series of athletic
events flashes back through our minds ...
the hard fought pitching duels in Dexter Park . . . the playoff games in
basketball which took place in the Garden with other high schools . .
the close finishes that took place in our pool.
Under
the Boards
As freshmen we cheered a basketball team that came from the bottom and
finished third. The following season we witnessed a new coach, Art Tunnel,
who drove his team to first place. Despite an overtime, we lost out in the
playoffs which took place in the Garden. After a year and a half layoff of
sports, Lane came out winning. As the first half of the season ended, we
held the undisputed position of first place. In the second half, we lost a
few games and wound up the season tied for first place. Although we again
lost out in the playoffs, we still put up a good fight.
This team is coached by Mr. Laffel.
In
the Swim
The Lane Swimming Team, under Mr.
Schoening, is losing three stars this term: Gerald Hickey, Richard
Reventas, and VValter Hickev. The latter was captain of the team and was
also chosen for the AU Queens Swimming Team last term. Lane has always
finished no lower than third in this sport.
